[Rescue of the Zumaia ichnofossil]
The fossil remains of an unknown organism have been rescued from an unstable abyss in Itzurun (Zumaia). The rescue has not been easy, since the portion of rock that surrounds the fossil weighs more than 200 kg. Thus, eight people worked on its extraction under the direction of the Department of Environment of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
It is a fossilized trace of an organism that lived in the Eocene, 49 million years ago (icnofossil). The size makes it exceptional. Fossils of this type that have been found so far are 30-40 centimeters long, while this one is 1.53 meters long. From now on, the interpretation of Alroa will be available to all those who want to see and study it.
