Location of Ngorongoro
Travelers fascinated by wildlife are most fond of the African continent, and Tanzania is a must-see country for experiencing and enjoying nature with life. One of its most important natural sites is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. with an area of 8,300 km2, four times the extension of Gipuzkoa, it is located in the region of Arusha, in the north of the country.
The heart of this protected area is the crater Ngorongoro. it has a diameter of 20 km and is known as the Tanzanian paradise. The volcano was extinguished thousands of years ago and now the interior of its crater is a very important wildlife reserve: Africa is a living sample of the fauna of the entire continent: zebras, gazelles, elephants, antelopes, pink flamingos, lions... It is estimated that around 25,000 mammals and birds live in the entire crater.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also famous for the excavations that took place in the Olduvai Canyon in the late 1960s. Thanks to the archaeological and paleontological remains that were found in the canyon, two types of hominids were found: Australopithecus and Homo habilis. Since then, the Ngorongoro area has been one of the most important places for the study of the human species.
Currently, the only people allowed to live in this protected area are the Maasai. They live at the base of the volcano. Dressed in their elegant red robe and ivory necklaces, they dedicate themselves to the grazing of cattle in the plains of the savannah, always ready to offer the traveler a smile.
