Sharing the microscopes
This hand belongs to the embryo of a geko (Phelsuma grandis) from Madagascar; it has a length of about 3 mm. “This is a huge sample for high-resolution microscopy,” says Grigorii Timin. That’s why it took Timin 2 days to take the hundreds of photos that make up the image.” This work was carried out under the guidance of Michel Milinkovitch, PhD at the University of Geneva. And they won the Nikon Small World 2022 microscope image contest with this image. In cyan color the nerves, and in warmer colors the bones, tendons, ligaments, skin, and blood cells. “This image is both beautiful and informative, both as a general overview and in the analysis of a specific area, since it illuminates how the structures are organized at the cellular level,” says Timin. “The Nikon Small World competition is a great opportunity to share how amazing nature is at a microscopic level, not only within a scientific community, but also with the general public.” In addition to the winner, the competition jury has also highlighted 91 other images.
