The microviews

This colorful image won the 2023 edition of the Nikon Small World microscope image contest. It is the head of the optic nerve of a rodent; it shows astrocytes (in yellow), contractile proteins (in red) and blood vessels (in green). In addition to being rewarding, the image is useful in the investigation of diabetic retinopathy. This is precisely what the authors, Hasannain Qambari and Jayden Dickson, study at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Australia.

One in five people with diabetes has this disorder. High blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the back of the eye, which is the retina. This can cause blurred vision or complete vision loss. “The visual system is a complex and highly specialized organ, and even the smallest alteration in the retinal circulation can have a devastating effect on vision,” Qambari explained. “I participated in this competition in order to show the complexity of retinal microcirculation.”

In addition to the winner, the competition jury has also highlighted 85 other images. We brought some of them here.
