Plant lice up close

Plant lice are well known to vegetable growers and horticulturists. But they could hardly ever see it this way. Aphis is a female of the fabae species. Without the need for males, by parthenogenesis, he has created the puppies that can be seen inside. An excellent strategy for rapid reproduction, to the disgrace of horticulturists.

This photograph, taken by Dr. Tomas Cabello of the University of Almeria, has been awarded the public prize of the prestigious Nikon Small World competition.
