Competition of scientific photographs of the UPV
This is the seventh edition of the photography contest organized by the General Service of Research SGIker of the University of the Basque Country. The Bioactive Endogenous Scaffold by Gorka Orive (left), and the Cellulose Sea of Lust photographs by Erlantz (right) have been awarded.
Gorka Orive’s photography has been a winner in the field of Life Sciences. Orive is a researcher at the BTI Biotechnology Institute who has won the award with a photo of a new biomaterial for regenerative medicine. It is a three-dimensional matrix (orange), rich in fibrin and growth factors (yellow), ideal for the growth of the patient's own cells (grey). The components of the biomaterial are derived from the patient's blood, so it is fully compatible with the patient.
The prize in the field of Materials Science and Technology went to Erlantz Lizundia, member of the Department of Graphic Expression and Engineering Projects of the UPV/EHU. The morphology of a thin copper deposit on a cellulose base is shown in Fig. The deposition was carried out by a technique that allows the formation of nanometer layers. In this case, the copper layer has a thickness of 200 nm and has been formed on a membrane composed of cellulose nanofibers (exposed on the left side of the figure). This membrane is called a nanopape. Researchers believe that in the future, nanopaper-copper films can be used in flexible electronics and telecommunications.
Almost 60 photographs have been submitted to the contest, all of which are visible on the contest website.
