Dallol volcano, an oasis of colors

In the northeast of Ethiopia, in the Afar triangle, in the middle of the Danakil desert, there is this oasis of colors: The Dallol volcano.

It is the lowest altitude volcano in the world, excluding submarines. It rises about 60 meters above the surrounding salt plains, but is 45 meters below sea level. And it is also one of the hottest places in the world, with an annual average of 35°C, with temperatures above 45°C being common.

the volcano rests on a salt deposit of 1,000 m in thickness. the last eruption was in 1926, and a crater with a diameter of about 30 meters was created. Today, the activity of the volcano is carried out in several thermal springs. From these springs the groundwater is extracted, full of salt, which crystallizes when the water evaporates, forming a landscape full of colors: green, yellow, white, red.
