Close up to the fauna of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a paradise for photographers. "It has everything: landscapes, volcanoes, lots of photos to take from a distance..." says photographer Danel Solabarrieta. "I went to take pictures nearby. And for that, Costa Rica is the best place. In the frogs there is an incredible variety, with very vivid colors, and there are a thousand other insects and animals that can come out very close and very beautiful. There’s no such thing as color or color here.”
Frogs were one of Solabarrieta's targets. "I was informed beforehand where they were, and I found them well. For example, since this red-eyed frog is nocturnal, I went to look for it at night, but when I found it, I realized that it had a very dilated pupil, and that the eye was almost black, red very little. I wanted my eyes red. So the trick is to go during the day, find him (he sleeps under the leaves), wake him up, and at first he sees the third eyelid, and when he opens it too, the red eye."
Other frogs belong to the day, like the one they call blue jeans because they seem to have jeans. "These are daytime and much more nervous. In that case it is almost impossible to chase them with all the traps."
Solabarrieta has closely portrayed many other animals besides frogs. He insists on butterflies. "Taking a good picture of a butterfly here is very difficult; they leave immediately. It’s much easier there. They move much less. And also, the butterflies are very colorful."
With the photograph taken of a butterfly, he won the award at the 2013 Fotciencia Award. This is the second year in a row that he has won this award. "I'm very happy. I didn’t expect it, because I saw that many photos were presented and very good. It was a surprise.” The photo is a macro of the wing of a butterfly with a special appearance: "It has a few drops of water in the south, and the magnifying glass effect of these drops makes the scales look swollen."
