NanoNeuro creates nanoparticles to study brain function

Through a collaboration between DIPC Donostia International Physics Center and Columbia University, researchers to stimulate neurons and register their activity have begun to build less invasive tools based on nanomaterials.

Nanoparticles are already used in medicine, for example, in cancer treatment, but are used for the first time in neuroscience.

The new line, called NanoNeuro, has presented a review of the first results in the journal Nature Methods. In the article, the authors have explained how nanomaterials, gold nanoparticles or quantum dots can be used to record the activities of neurons and create new manipulation methods.

According to DIPC Director Ricardo Diéz-Muiño, this new line of research created alongside Columbia University is the result of a long-term vision that has already begun to bear fruit.
