Researchers from the Faculty of Informatics of the UPV have developed an algorithmic model of diagnosis and prognosis of multiple sclerosis, in collaboration with the Biodonostia Health Research Institute.

Multiple sclerosis is one of the diseases addressed by researchers in the Neurosciences area of Biodonostia. Based on their experience, researchers believed that some molecules called microRNA were related to the disease. Thus, samples were taken from patients affected by multiple sclerosis and the expressive levels of their microRNA molecules were analyzed.

These data were consulted by members of the UPV/EHU Intelligent Systems Research Group. They built an algorithmic classification model with the aim of making a diagnosis and prognosis of multiple sclerosis by taking microRNA as a biomarker. "By introducing the levels of expression, this model should be able to predict whether there was any disease or at what stage it was," explains one of the bioinformatics Borja Calvo. These models announced a "pretty good" disease and are now in the appraisal phase.
