Food Day
2002/10/16 Elhuyar Zientzia
On the occasion of World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has published data on hunger. According to these data, 840 million people worldwide are hungry, 799 million of whom live in developing countries, 30 million in transition and 11 million in industrialized countries. In addition, millions of people starve each year, including about six million children under five.
FAO warns that the number of people living hungry decreases very little year after year. Therefore, while at the 1996 World Food Congress it was said that by 2015 it would be attempted to halve that amount, it must be recognized that much is needed to meet the goal.
This year’s theme is ‘Water as a source of food security’. With this, FAO wants to highlight the importance of freshwater in food. Above all, the need to improve the use of water needed by agricultural land has been announced, and this year, above all, will be what different groups of the organization will work on.
