Carbon 14

1995/02/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The radioactive isotope carbon-14 has just been detected for the first time in space. Its half-life is 5,700 years, so it can be very useful for astronomers to date space events. This technique is used by soil archaeologists.

Carbon 14 has been detected in the gas cloud around the red giant CW Leonis. The star is at a distance of 600 light years and has many carbon and carbon compounds.
