2002/11/29 Mendiburu, Joana - Elhuyar Zientziaren Komunikazioa

The Minister of Environment, Sabin Intxaurraga, and the Director of Reporting and Networking Coordination of the European Environment Agency, Peter Bosch, presented yesterday afternoon in Bilbao the 22 indicators that will be taken into account to measure the state of the environment in the ACBC.
Sabin Intxaurraga, Minister of Environment of the Basque Country.

The commitment to monitor and publicize the evolution of these indicators must be framed within a community project. At the moment, the network of environmental indicators has few European regions and is the first in the State.

22 environmental indicators

Intxaurraga has stated that the state of the environment can be measured according to many factors, but limiting itself to 22 indicators is easier to understand and measure for all.

The data will be released annually in November. However, they will serve to know the evolution more than to know the current situation. In this way it will be possible to know if the environmental policy is correct or if it is necessary to adopt more concrete measures.

These 22 indicators are divided into 13 departments:

  • Water quality
  • Air quality
  • Soil quality
  • Consumption of natural resources
  • Waste disposal
  • Greenhouse gas emissions and climate change
  • Biodiversity and landscape
  • Urban environment
  • Environmental risks
  • Health and Environment
  • Company and environment
  • Administration and environment
  • Ecoefficiency indicators
