2003/01/31 Elhuyar Zientzia

The image shows a Christian protein of the herpes causing virus (VRS). This protein, called ICP8, is used by the virus to access DNA. The challenge of scientists is to know the structure of this protein. The goal is to find a drug that makes it difficult for this protein to function within the investigation against herpes.

Researchers isolate and crystallize proteins to investigate their structures. Then, the x-ray analysis allows to know the structure of the protein. However, the crystals themselves are very visible.
