Most geophysics agree that the main agent of the earth's magnetic field is the convection currents of cast iron in the earth's nucleus. And they know that the polarity of the magnetic field has changed several times in the history of the Earth. To explain why investment occurs, but it is nothing simple, and theories that have arisen so far are extremely complex.

Now, physicist Francois Pétrélis proposes a new model of investment in an article published in the journal Physical Review Letters. In this model only the components of the earth's magnetic field and not the convection currents are considered.

In fact, it proposes that, besides the dipolar field, there is another field (quadropole) that is the one that leads the investment: when one weakens, the other strengthens the magnetic North pole becomes the magnetic South pole. And vice versa. This model greatly facilitates the explanation of the system.
