Cardiovascular and respiratory complications are the most serious problems caused by covid-19, and during the last weeks it has been common if ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs worsen the evolution of the disease. For the moment, experts do not have proof to certify it, but it may be so taking into account the available evidence.
According to a study conducted last year by French researchers, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is related to complications of respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia and pleural effusion. Experimental data suggest that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs worsen the functions of the neutrophils, such as entering the area of inflammation and preventing its resolution. In addition, they warn that sometimes the consumption of anti-inflammatory drugs delays hospital admission and the beginning of antibiotic treatment.
The editorial of the medical journal BMJ has published that there is more research in the same line and that there is sufficient evidence that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can worsen and lengthen diseases caused by respiratory infections. It is recognized that there is still not enough evidence to ensure that they cause damage in the case of covid-19, but it is noted that even more studies should not recommend the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
