Opentrad: results and errors

2006/09/19 Carton Virto, Eider - Elhuyar Zientzia

Last May, the automatic translator Opentrad was presented to the public. This system allows automatic translation of texts and web pages from Spanish to Basque, Galician and Catalan, as well as the Spanish version of texts in Galician and Catalan.

This project involved three companies and four universities, led by Eleka Ingeniaritza Linguistikoa S.L. In addition to Eleka, they have worked the Elhuyar Foundation and the software company imaxin|Galicia. As for universities, Opentrad has been present in the project the University of the Basque Country, the University of Alicante (Valencia), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the University of Vigo.

Translations between Romanesque languages give very good results, but translations from Spanish to Basque are not adequate in most cases. In this sense, during the presentation of the project a bit of revolt arose and the researchers have received various criticisms.

A few days ago, researchers from the IXA group published on erabili.com an interesting article explaining the details of Opentrad. The article evaluates the results and errors of the project, as well as the steps that are wanted to be taken forward.
