The journal Nature has just published the decoding of the genome of the laboratory mouse. The news is very important to scientists, and for many it is similar to that of the human genome, since mice are fundamental in all medical research.

It is estimated that 25 million mice are used every day in laboratories around the world to investigate human diseases. These mice are mice of the species Mus musculus, very similar to their genome and that of the man. Therefore, it is to be assumed that the decoding of the mouse genome will mean a great boost for many research.

The work has been done by the Mouse Genome Decoding Consortium and have deciphered almost all the letters of the mouse genome. The results indicate that it is 14% lower than that of the human being and that approximately 80% of the genes are equal to ours.
