The Kauriak in danger
2000/08/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria
The Kauriak are a giant tree, one of the largest in the world, which has been in New Zealand for one hundred and fifty million years. Some of these conifers are very popular for teachers. One of them called Te Matua Ngahere (father of Baso), is over 2,000 years old. Another is the Tane Hose (Basajauna) with the following measures: 51.5 meters high and 14 meters circumference. However, in recent times the wood industry has squeezed the forests and considerably decreased the flows. Consequently, the New Zealand government has prepared a program to protect tree heritage.
