Gradiometry: new method of detection of underground tunnels

2001/05/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

It has been called gravity gradiometry and measures the differences generated by underground gaps in gravitational attraction.

When a tunnel or installation is built in the subsoil, part of the earth mass disappears, so the gravity signal measured on the surface of the ground is weaker. This signal change could also be measured with the methods so far. However, by measuring the rate of gravity change instead of measuring gravity, a greater sensitivity is achieved, which is what the gradiometer measures.
