Spectacular image of the Zalburu nebula

2002/01/28 Elhuyar Zientzia

With the data collected by the very large telescope (VLT) in Chile, they have reproduced this spectacular image of the Zalburu nebula. The Zalburu nebula is found in Orion and, although its official name is Barnard 33, it is known as the pseudonym that has given it the appearance. What looks like the horse's head is a dense cloud of dust that is about 1,400 light-years away.

The image above is a combination of three photographs taken by the FORS2 instrument of the VLT telescope.
