Bright and young galaxy

1998/01/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The image of this emerging galaxy has been obtained by combining data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Hawaii Keck with a 10-meter diameter mirror.

So far in the Universe this type of galaxy has never been detected. It is recognized that the universe is fourteen billion years old and the galaxy that has just detected the international group of young astronomers is thirteen billion light-years. Therefore, the galaxy emerges at a relatively early moment in the history of the Universe. From that time, quasars have been detected and in galaxies like ours the last one that was created for the moment has been found.

The resulting image shows a set of very hot gases with bright zones corresponding to emerging stars. There are strong winds that collide in the group of stars that are forming. Due to the flames of emerging stars, this galaxy is very bright, ten times brighter than our Milky Way.
