"China allocates a lot of money to the technology of transgenic plants to be in development," explains a report from the journal Nature. But not only that, but in 1999, for example, a total investment of 112 million dollars was made in this territory. The country that spends the most in this field is the American: 3,000 million dollars in 1999. In Europe, on the contrary, the attitude in favor of transgenic foods is not habitual.
In China, the government pays the necessary investigations in this new framework. Unlike the United States, the research focuses on environmental care, since 65 factories already implanted comply with environmental protection standards, 15 more than in the United States.
"Consumer safety is not taken care of so much," said Scott Rozelle, an American agricultural economist. However, in Chinese research, GM plants resistant to diseases or drugs are primanded, while in Western countries those that can report greater economic benefits predominate.
