A soyuz spacecraft exploded yesterday

2002/10/16 Carton Virto, Eider - Elhuyar Zientzia

The explosion took place 20 seconds after its launch, just over eight yesterday. There have been no casualties, but 44 ESA experiments have been destroyed.

The spacecraft was to take the Foton M-1 research satellite into space with 44 experiments promoted by ESA. Although at first someone was thought to have died, the ESA has stated that all who have left the space agencies of France and Germany are fine.

The Russians will begin an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident, but ESA is concerned about the possible incidence of the accident on flights scheduled for Soyuz spacecraft. In fact, the ESA astronaut will travel on 28 October to the Frank De Winne International Space Station on a ship similar to that of Soiuz.
