NASA drowns in its waters!

2001/07/13 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

The pages that newspapers assign to astronomy are fed by water-related news. In these articles, astronomers seem to be about to drown in the desert. And why? Because water is simply the basis of life. But all this is publicity dressed in sensationalism. I think there is a lot of speculative air and some points have to be clarified.

From a scientific point of view it must be remembered that water alone does not create life. On the other hand, the month in which I was born was first detected water in space, more than thirty years ago. In addition, life needs water in a liquid state and as much then as it has now been detected in a vapor state, it is not useful to create life.

In addition, many other and complex molecules are necessary to form living beings. The type of life on Earth requires at least millions of very concrete components and conditions. Among others, amino acids are needed. They have also been detected in space and, however, is not enough. To affirm that there is life in space it is necessary to find organisms and not a simple pair of components (even if they are basic molecules).

From a social point of view, I think we have to look at NASA in a very critical way. Two years ago he lost two probes on Mars and thus many American public funds. Despite being cheap for space research, it was a fortune. In fact, this year's Aventis award-winning book, the most important science outreach award, notes that in both missions the U.S. government lost more money than it was awarded to ocean research.

Therefore, NASA must take care of public opinion, so when talking about water it refers to alien life. That sells it well! But it is enough. If you find any organism in space, I would love it. In the meantime, do not deceive us through the press.
