Fluorescent corals

2002/05/31 Elhuyar Zientzia

Oceanographer Steve Ackleson has produced fluorescence in coral through blue light.

Submarine fluorescence was first seen in 1927, but photos of this phenomenon have been worked since the 1950s. Now, oceanographer Steve Ackleson discovers that coral can also be influenced. He dipped into the water of the Florida barrier reef with the intention of photographing and discovered that blue light under the corals causes fluorescence. This effect cannot be considered as bioluminescence, since it is not produced by the animal itself, but can influence its structure.
