The city of the star

2002/12/03 Elhuyar Zientzia

Hakodate is the city of the photo. The photo was taken last August, from one of the windows of the International Space Station. Photographs of astronauts are used in studies such as marine currents, etc., since sunlight reflected in water highlights these phenomena. In this photo, for example, the waves inside the water look perfectly.

The city of Hakodate is located south of the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the astronauts easily separate it thanks to the central star. This five-pointed star structure is called Goryokaku and was the first fortress built in Japan in western style. Built between 1857 and 64, it has 251,000 square meters. Today it is a park in which, in addition to the citizens, many tourists circulate.
