Work better for three

2001/12/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

When ants load too much, they work together. Researchers at the University of Bristol have discovered a particular behavior of these spectacular animals.

When transporting the cargo in group they do it three in three. In the center is placed the largest ant and on the sides the two smaller. In this way they manage to distribute the weight and the center of gravity almost ideally. But the surprising thing is not teamwork, but “nature planning.” In fact, the largest of the ants working for three is higher than average, while the small ones are lower than average.
