The future of the European mountains under review
2003/02/07 Elhuyar Zientzia
Faced with the disappearance of agriculture in mountain areas, the European Union has launched the Bioscenne project. It is about analyzing the risks and opportunities that the disappearance of agriculture generates in the conservation of wildlife. They also seek ways to reconcile human activities with biodiversity conservation.
Since extensive agriculture and livestock are gaining less and less in mountain areas, people turn to cities, which causes changes in these areas. Within the framework of the Bioscenne project, different territories in this situation will be analyzed, such as the British Cairngorms, Grande Causse de Francia, the Norwegian mountains of Jotenheimen, Bukovskevrchy of Slovakia or Greek Pindos. Among other things, they will measure the changes that have occurred in mountain species, ecology, human activities and the economy in the last 50 years and will try to draw conclusions for the future.
