Fossilized sex of turtles

They died while copulating nine pairs of turtles discovered at the German site Messel. This has been deduced by researchers from the University of Tübingen, analyzing those 47 million years of fossils found in the sediments of a lake. The journal Biology Letters has published that all are pairs of a male and a female that in some cases have the tails aligned. The aquatic turtles, when caught in the water, slowly sink. This is not usually a problem, but, in this case, the researchers hypothesis is that the bottom waters of the lagoon were free of oxygen and toxic.
