Toxic algae in Australia

1992/02/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

A microscopic algae that grows in rivers, coasts and ponds of Australia can cause an ecological massacre. According to local researchers, many cows and goats have already died due to this algae called anabaena.

The Murray-Darling River is polluted at 1,200 km and poisoned the drinking water of sixteen State towns called New South Wales.

The consumption of water contaminated by algae produces irritations in the eyes and skin and gastroenteritis.

It seems that the main cause of the expansion of this algae has been the mixture of heat and waste from agricultural fertilizers.
