Last September 4th we inform you of the scientific research that the Aranzadi Science Society is carrying out around the aurora. Several of the participants of this project have come to Canada to make photographs and video recordings of the aurora. We have studied the relationship between solar activity and the appearance of auroras, the characteristics of aurora and the influence of the magnetic field they generate.
To do this, another group of researchers from Aranzadi has been in charge of studying solar activity from the Miramon Kutxaespacio Science Observatory. It analyzes the data obtained by satellite and informs those who have come to Canada of the possibility of explaining their auroras.
During this last week, several active areas have been detected in the Sun, as evidenced by the solar scars that can be seen in the photo of the Donostian researchers. Normally, these active zones are usually related to the emission of matter into space, which are the ones that, upon reaching Earth, produce the aurora phenomenon.
The violent phenomenon that has occurred these days in one of these active areas in the Sun has led to the emission of important particles into space towards the Earth. Based on this observation, the team of researchers that has remained in San Sebastian noted that during the nights of 19 and 20 September auroras could be seen in the polar countries. Here's the first photo they've sent from Canada!
