A group of researchers from the University of Manchester has detected feather remains in a fossil of Archaeopteryx. Archaeopteryx is the first known bird, with features of birds and dinosaurs such as feathers and teeth. Researchers have used an X-ray synchrotron and studied its structure and chemical composition without damaging the fossil.
Until now it was considered that in the fossil there were only lumen impressions, but the research has clarified that in lumen impressions the composition is not similar to that of the surrounding rock, so the remains of feathers and fossilized tissues remain there.
On the other hand, the team of researchers has alerted museums to take extreme precautions in cleaning this type of fossils, since their treatments are losing really useful scientific information.
