Zorionak Ekaia

2009/12/02 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

The UPV published in 1989 the first issue of Ekaia magazine. Twenty years later, the Editorial Board of the magazine has organized an event in the Bizkaia Experience Hall of the UPV/EHU to celebrate the anniversary of the magazine.

Latest issue of Ekaia magazine.

The event had two parts. In the first, Mr. Jazinto Iturbe, the first Vice-Rector of the UPV Basque Country, was the first person to promote the creation of Ekaia magazine. The entry was made by the director of Ekaia, Josu Juice, and the vice-rector of the Basque Country and Plurilingualism of the UPV, Jon Irazusta. After talking about the history of Ekaia magazine, Jazinto Iturbe took the floor to thank the tribute and remember the first years of the magazine.

The second part discussed the importance of the dissemination of science in Basque. The participants were Juan Ignacio Pérez, former rector of the UPV, Gidor Bilbao, former director of the Basque Service of the UPV/EHU and Karmele Artetxe, historian and documentalist. The debate was led by D. Fernando Plazaola, member of the Ekaia commission.

In addition to celebrating the anniversary, the 22 issue of Ekaia magazine was presented, the last issue that has been published recently. Now number per year

publish approximately one, but it has not always been so: although in the first years two numbers were published, in some years no number was published. He has influenced the director of the time. "Kepa Altonaga and Fernando Plazaola were the ones that drew the most numbers," recalls Juice.

In the last two years Josu Juice himself has been the director of the magazine. And being in that position, he looks forward to the future. "The main challenge of our magazine has always been to consolidate the magazine itself," he says. "We must promote a lot to be known. I think today it is essential that people can easily access the magazine. That is why the university is promoting electronic journals; Ekaia will also go that way."

Kepa Altonaga, awarded

Another reason for the celebration was Friday. The former director of Ekaia, Kepa Altonaga, has won the Juan Zelaia award from the Pamiela publishing house.

The award-winning text, the essay "Darwin gurean", analyzes the influence of Darwin's theory in Euskal Herria. In general, doctors took the new theory well. The Church, on the other hand, stood against it. However, Altonaga's analysis is much deeper and the stories he tells are richer. It tells the story of Leon Uthurburu, a North Indiano who bought the island of Floreana in Galapagos, among others.

The editorial Pamiela will publish in spring the essay awarded.

The magazine Ekaia has completed the first twenty years and Kepa Altonaga has won the Juan Zelaia prize. Congratulations to both!
