Map of the sky

2003/05/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

About 500 million celestial objects have been photographed and placed on the internet. Stars, galaxies, asteroids and comets make up the photographic archive. The photographs have been made with twin telescopes in Chile and Arizona, and the project has lasted four years.

Since the telescopes work in the infrared zone, we have been able to take images of several celestial bodies that prevent us from seeing the gases and dust of space. The 2MASS project has been promoted by the University of Massachusetts, IPAC, NASA and the United States Science Foundation.
