Antarctica ice also grows in winter

2008/06/16 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

During the month of May, a large part of an ice plate has been broken linking two islands of Antarctica; it is the first time scientists observe this phenomenon in winter.

However, it is not the first time the plate is broken. During the month of February there has been a great fracture due to the effects of climate change. The plate is an ice bridge between the islands Charcot and Latady, which after breaking in February remained 6 kilometers wide. After a new break in May, a width of 2.7 kilometers has remained.

Researchers at the University of Bonn have been studying the dynamics of this ice sheet for some time. They consider that in the coming days the bridge will be completely broken, since a crack has remained in the narrowing of the bridge.
