New US particle accelerator

1989/02/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The EU government has decided to build the world's largest particle accelerator in Texas.

The superconducting has been called Super Collide (SSC) and will be built completely underground. The total cost of the project will be $4.4 billion. It is intended to be completed by 1996.

The SSC will produce 20 million electronics per batch of particles. In comparison, CERN's proton/antiproton accelerator in Geneva works at 0.6 million eV. This accelerator is the dream of all particle physicists.

It will fire two beams of protons against baptism with the energy that has never been achieved so far. The information obtained by colliding the two lots is expected to help understand the situation of the initial Universe. It may also be possible to detect particles that until now are only theoretical, such as the Higgs boson and the “truth” quarka.
