The bulging of Io

2007/03/08 Rementeria Argote, Nagore - Elhuyar Zientziaren Komunikazioa

In this photo taken by the New Horizons probe, it seems that the satellite of Io Jupiter is bulging. It is the eruption of a volcano: Column of 290 kilometers of height of the volcano Tvashtar.

The image also shows the column of another volcano (on the left), smaller than the previous one, with a column of 60 kilometers, and more symmetrical.

Io is one of the most special satellites of our solar system. Seeing it closely, astronomers were surprised by the activity of the volcanoes of Io. This photo, taken by New Horizons, undoubtedly shows the greatness of this activity.
