Some keys to hair growth, but not all

2005/10/07 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

American scientists from Maryland analyze the genetic mechanism that makes mice hair grow. Precisely with the activation of a gene, they have achieved that mice without hair grow. This does not mean that burusoils have developed a hair recovery technique, but this research will help them figure out where they should go on that path. (Hairless means in English without hair). This gene launches all the activities necessary for hair growth. Biochemists call this set of activities the Wnt path, a process in which the follicles of the skin are continuously renewed. The continuous renewal of the follicles is essential for hair growth. The functioning of the Wnt is not entirely known, but the knowledge of the Hairless gene as activator of this process has meant a great breakthrough. In fact, they have confirmed that by muting Hairless they do not grow hair to mice and, in this case, they have managed to recover the hair by repairing the gene. However, human baldness has other origins, so in most cases the manipulation of the Hairless gene would not serve to recover the hair.
