Young students and researchers analyzing energy efficiency in schools

2023/05/11 STEAM-Hezkuntza (Elhuyar Zientzia)

The students of Vocational Training of the Polytechnic EASO, together with the research team ENEDI of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), have investigated the energy efficiency of school buildings during the course 2022-2023, within the ILARGI project and the Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka initiative.

The students, together with researchers from the research team ENEDI of the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, have worked actively and collaboratively on the keys to energy efficiency, through informative talks, global energy consumption and CAPV data, the valuation of forced consumption of a home and a school center, and the development of energy efficiency proposed.

To validate the research, the energy demand of the school has been measured through the following experiments:

  1. The thermal installations of the school building have been analyzed and their control verified.
  2. School infiltrations have been measured with a standardized test called “blower-door”.
  3. To promote knowledge of thermal radiation, thermographic research has been conducted in school and the thermal bridges that may exist on the walls have been visualized.

In addition, young people have visited the laboratory of professionals dedicated to energy efficiency, the Quality Control Laboratory of Buildings of the Basque Government (LCCE).

  1. They have known the Passive House standard and have visited an example of such buildings in Vitoria (European Conference Palace).
  2. The thermal, acoustic and mechanical sections of the IC have been visited and the tests performed on it have been observed.

Finally, students have worked in groups activities and proposals to promote the energy efficiency of the center, to jointly improve the energy efficiency of the building.

These kinds of activities are very interesting to put students in the role of scientists, to know what the everyday life of scientists and technologists looks like and to participate in the real experiments and research carried out by researchers.

The ILARGI project has received the grant and participation of the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea within the research projects University/Company/Society 2022.
