Interestingly, the mass of leaves and stems of plants is proportional to the mass of the roots and proportionality is independent of the species and habitat. In addition, it can be expressed by a mathematical equation. This will allow biologists to perform calculations on the amount of underground biomass.

After two years of research, researchers from Cornell and Arizona universities have unveiled the discovery in the journal Science. According to them, it will serve to know the amount of carbon that accumulates in plants.
