Homemade robotic fly

2001/12/04 Elhuyar Zientzia

In California, at the University of Berkeley, a unique project is being developed: the robotic fly. Once finished, the fly will have 25 millimeters and, like the real fly, will be able to fly. Through this project, experts will conduct feasibility analysis, manufacturing structures, aerodynamic and motion analysis and flight controls.

The project is much more complicated than it seems, since until recently experts do not know the movements of the wings of the real flies. Flight flies use three types of movement. Thanks to this, flies are able to carry twice their weight, with little energy. What nature has created by itself is not easy to turn into a robotic device, since the fly has to have less than 20 milligrams and the wings move 150 times per second.
