The magazine Elhuyar has a new section: In action

2014/12/02 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Together with the December issue, the magazine Elhuyar Zientzia eta Teknologia has created the section "In action". The scientists are the protagonists of the section and the people interviewed are the experiences of the profession. They will tell us what they do, how they have arrived, what has led them to be scientists, what worries them, what they want... The researcher and the person, in action, will receive the two faces of the same coin.

Another distinguishing feature is the section “In Action”, where young researchers and women will be the protagonists. And why young researchers and why women? Because the data show that there are more women who abandon the research career than men.

The distribution of researchers in the conduct of the doctoral thesis is average and average according to the report Women in Science of the UNESC woman/man (2013) — 49%/ 51% in Spain, 47%/ 53% in France — as the research career advances, men predominate: In Spain, women represent 38% of the researchers, compared to 26% in France. At Ikerbasque, an organization based on excellence, the panorama is even worse: it currently has 177 researchers of high level and only 19% are women, and the program of young researchers Fellow are also presented fewer women than men.

The reasons for this to be so are many and complex. Is excellence in science possible without equality? Many of them attended the round table. Because the debate on equality and excellence is multidimensional. The chapter "In action" aims to address one of these vertices, the specific visibility of women's contribution to science.

This work will collaborate with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and in addition to the magazine Elhuyar, the blog Zientzia Kaiera will accommodate these young researchers in action. The first is pharmaceutical researcher Enara Herran Martínez.
