The highest number of suicides in Asia

1997/09/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

According to a study by the World Welfare Organization and Harvard University in the United States, the number of suicides in China and other Asian states (Sri Lanka, Taiwan, etc.) is three times higher than in Western countries. There are 30 out of every 100,000 dead. In addition, in China, unlike anywhere else in the world, more women commit suicide and in the rural world the suicide rate is three times higher than in cities.

With the theories used so far (mental illness, consequences of urbanization, etc.) it is difficult to clarify this trend. The situation in the East can therefore be explained for other reasons: Having a tradition in China where suicide is allowed, the pressure society exerts on women, etc.
