It seems that the walls are not now. In fact, a Chinese site has found lots of 150 million years ago. And not little: More than 500 units on a plot of 10 m2.

All of them are of two species, but in different phases of growth. In one of the species appears the larva, the adults and all the intermediate phases of the water in the sight of the gill. The other species, apparently, is the neotenic, that is, that which, being physically immature, has reproductive capacity

this is quite common also in current amphibians

These fossils do not provide information about the ancestors of the roe, but they are believed to serve to clarify evolutionary aspects.
