Unicellular algae scales awarded in microphotography

2010/01/21 Lakar Iraizoz, Oihane - Elhuyar Zientzia

At first glance, this photo is not very striking and few people would propose to win a traditional photo contest. But yes, it has won a contest, the II Biomedical Microphotography organized by the UPV. Competition.

51 images have been submitted to the competition and the jury has chosen it, among other things because it is technically difficult to take a photo of this type. The photograph shows two microscopic scales on the surface of a unicellular marine algae (Chrysochromuline pringsheimii). Scales, of approximately one micrometer, are very useful for the taxonomic characterization of unicellular beings who inhabit the oceans. The author is Sergio Seoane, researcher of the department of Cell Biology and Histology of the UPV.
