The eels to extinguish

2003/12/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The number of fluvial eels in Europe (Angilla angilla) has suffered a spectacular decline of 99% since 1978. According to experts, pollution can be one of the culprits. In fact, the eels reproduce once and spend much of their life in estuaries, needing to mature between 10-50 years. During this period, persistent contaminants, such as PCBs, accumulate in their sexual organs, causing their deaths and/or making the reproductive process difficult.
