Penis, an efficient design

2004/04/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Despite the different evolutionary pathways, reptiles and mammals have developed the same design as the penis. This is a consequence of a new investigation that has been carried out after the study of the sticks of armadillos and turtles.

Both layers of collagen fiber have been detected. When the blood is pumped into the penis a great hardness is achieved, since the fibers reach the maximum length. However, they have also seen differences between the two. Mammals only have two layers of fiber, one parallel to the long axis of the penis and another perpendicular to it. However, in the turtle penis there are several layers that give it greater hardness.

According to the researchers, the penises of mammals and reptiles evolved from different embryonic tissues, but by fulfilling the same function they have developed the same evolutionary path.
