Volcanoes do not sleep

2003/02/03 Elhuyar Zientzia

Thanks to satellite images, scientists have discovered that four seemingly inactive Andean volcanoes are active. Satellites have observed the same zones in different periods of time and have discovered differences between images and others. This indicates that geological changes are occurring in these volcanoes where there was no activity. This does not necessarily mean a rash, but a risk.

In view of this, some geologists have proposed a global census of volcanoes, since more volcanoes than expected may have some volcanic activity. The satellites will be very useful to carry out the census, as well as to know the affected areas and the degree of condition in case of eruption or earthquake.
