Burial of the sardine

1995/08/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Dead sardines appear on the Australian coast. Until today, biologists have not been able to solve the mystery of dead sardines. In order to clarify the event, the Maritime Institute of Port Lincoln is working and is turning, but so far they have not achieved anything.

No one knows what Australia's sardine attacks. This kills mature sardines about 12 cm. The epidemic goes away in three or four days. However, it does not leave mature sardines alive on those dates.

According to the first hypotheses, one of the algae that eat sardines is responsible for the massacre. This hypothesis, however, does not explain the selectivity of the attack, that is, why it kills mature sardines and not smaller individuals or other fish of the same species.
